The studio is located in Reston, Virginia. It is just off Sunrise Valley Drive, within walking distance from Sunrise Elementary School and South Lakes Shopping Center. My music teaching includes the Suzuki approach to music which fosters a joyful and nurturing environment. Doctor Shinichi Suzuki, the Japanese violinist and teacher, noticed that children learned to talk long before they were able to read. It is this ability that allows children as young as 3 years of age to be able to play an instrument. Because the children often start at a young age, it is essential for the parent to participate in the process of learning. The parent of a young student attends the lessons and learns how to create a fun learning environment in the home. I am always amused when the child gleefully overtakes the parents and the roles are reversed.
I was educated in England and completed the Royal Schools of Music Syllabus to Advanced Level. I graduated from the University of Manchester, Sedgeley Park College, majoring in Education and Music. I have been teaching for over twenty years and it is something I was born to do. Teaching is my life and I really enjoy my students. I take great pride in their accomplishments and am always looking for creative ways to enrich my program so that the students will be happy, enthusiastic and successful.
I am a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers and all my students take part in the judged guild auditions every year. The Suzuki Association of the Greater Washington Area (SAGWA) holds a Summer Institute every year, which I have attended with my students.
THE PRIVATE LESSON
My students benefit from a comprehensive approach to piano study, incorporating theory, ear training, sight reading and technique. The lesson is structured, but fun, and is broken down into sections that allow for the individual concentration span of each child.
Materials that reinforce learning are introduced at the keyboard and away from the keyboard at certain times during the lesson so that there is wiggle time, which is essential for young children. The varied lesson allows for an energy shift which increases focus and learning. The children love the materials and games which help them to learn difficult theory concepts quite rapidly.
Children will also observe each others' lessons and sometimes work on the activities together. It is often hard to pull them away and they often want to stay on longer.
